Coronavirus – Where Did It Start?

As of this writing, we still do not know how the coronavirus started, how it is transmitted, or how to control it.

Early reports thought the virus was transmitted from certain animals to humans.  This might have some merit, or it could be that we in American do not understand eating certain animals.

Humans have eaten the animals that China does since the beginning of time.  Eating lizards was not something the Chinese people just thought about and ate. Early reports said the virus could be transmitted by eating bats or lizards.  With this in mind, we need to go back to the Bible and see what God says about what you eat.

Can We Understand the Coronavirus Through the Bible?

In Deuteronomy and Leviticus, God gives the Law to the Israelites.  These laws govern how the Israelites where to live and eat. When the Bible was written, other nations lived and ate in a way that God did not want his people to live. He wanted his people to live in a way that was set apart from the other nations of the world.

What does God say about eating bats and lizards?

Leviticus 11:13-19

These are the birds you are to regard as unclean and not eat because they are unclean: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, the red kite, any kind of black kite, any kind of raven, the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.

Leviticus 11:29-31

Of the animals that move along the ground, these are unclean for you: the weasel, the rat, any kind of great lizard, the gecko, the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink and the chameleon. Of all those that move along the ground, these are unclean for you.

So, What Should We Eat?

Why did America not adopt the eating of what we would call “strange” or “weird” animals?  America was founded on Biblical principles.  While we did not establish a national religion, our founders were very familiar with the Scriptures and based our way of life on those principles.

This is what the Bible says about what animals to eat:

Leviticus 11:1-3

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Say to the Israelites: ‘Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat: You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud.

Verses 4 through 8 will describe in detail the animals that are “clean” and allowed to eat.  Pigs specifically are said to be “unclean” and are forbidden to eat.

Verses 9 through 12 describe the creatures of the sea at are allowed for food.  The question here is do they have fins and scales?  If they do – okay to eat.  Creatures of the sea have no fins and scales – not allowed to eat.

Verses 13 through 19 describe the birds that are allowed to eat for food. No Bats!

Coronavirus or not –  let’s consume what our Creator has designed for us to eat.
